Understanding Energy Systems

Knowing your body when targeting exercise is going to support you in optimising the areas you’re aiming to target and reflect in your progress to your personal goals. Your body has three main energy systems that mirror onto health and exercise, these include: ATL-PC System, Glycolysis System and the Oxidative System.

ATP-PC System

One of the primary energy systems is the ATP-PC System. Providing quick, intense and short bursts of energy. This system supports strength rather than fat loss. Exercises such as weight lifting and sprinting mainly use this energy system, fuelling your bodies energy for up to 10 seconds. After this point the energy is passed onto the next system.

Glycolysis System

The Glycolysis System is used to fuel short intense workouts. Using carbs for energy in short intense activities, partially targeting fat loss but mainly burning carbohydrates. Exercises like HIIT workouts, which are short and intense, optimise this energy system.

Oxidative System

The final energy system is the Oxidative System. Best for optimising fat loss, it uses oxygen to burn fat for long steady activities like walking, jogging or any cardio activity at a moderate intensity. Supporting long term and sustained exercise through your aerobic system. Engaging your oxidative system can have many benefits on a large variety of health factors, such as strengthening and improving heart health, supporting weight management and reducing inflammation.
